Flailpaw's Apprentice Ceremony

Dogstar had barely become leader, and already he had been faced with more than enough problems. Many of the ShadowClan apprentices had gone without mentors for too long. A subdued Dogstar approached HighStone, readying himself for the fatal moment. Hopefully he remembered all the words. Jumping up onto HighRock, he yowled, "All cats old enough to catch their own prey please gather!"

A whispering breeze tore through the cold, and wrapped a cold embrace around Flailpaw. He was just so excited! He was going to be apprenticed! But who would his mentor be? His paws shuffled out of excitement, but moreover nervousness. A gray cloud shifted, and a brand of sunlight shone on him, warming his back. Flailpaw turned slightly to get out of the immense light.

Looking up to his leader with admiration, Flailpaw listened intently on every word Dogstar spoke. It seemed to mesmerize him as he waiting not to patiently for the time for him to go up and be accepted as an apprentice, and to be able to get out of the darned nursery. He wasn't a squealing kit anymore, and he didn't expect to be treated as such. Flailpaw diverted his eyes for a second, then looked straight back up to Dogstar.

In his mind thoughts buzzed. Who will be my mentor? Will I like my new mentor? Will they like me? I hate waiting... His fur ruffled in the calming breeze, and thinking deeply, he tried to rule out all the possible warriors who could be his mentor. Would he have to share a mentor? Or would he get post poned a mentor?

Liontooth reported to the highrock, grinning. Not because someone told him a funny joke, but because, he knew something others didn't. Liontooth let his silver mane flow in the mighty wind picking up. He made himself look poise and graceful, but he finally looked up to his leader, Dogstar, who looked very stressed, and calmed his self by letting his fur relax, along with hist tensed muscles, and sat down. His fluffy tail wrap around his darker paws. Witch blocked out the now biting wind.

Liontooth's mind had fianlly drifted away, to his own apprentice cermony. The old leader, Swiftstar, had presented the cermony. He remembered, two warriors, Redscale and Peaceheart wanted to mentor Lion'paw', and they had argued about it all week. Swiftstar had finally decided. Tenses were rising as she gracefully made her way onto Highstone. Most cats were already there, as Swiftstar began the traditional cermony calling. She annouced that she herself would mentor. The two angry warriors left abruptly, and attracted very little attention on there way out. The rest of it was directed to Lion'paw' at the time, and he rememebered every 'Congratulations', every, 'You'll do great!'. He loved, and that was one of his best moments in his life.

Flailpaw saw a great large silver tom climb his way onto the Highstone with much grace. He stared in awe at Dogstar. If he's my mentor, I'll never make fun of the other kits again. He though, his mind wandering off to all the times he had been a bully to others.

[glow=orange,2,300]Acorntail wriggled his way up to the clearing. Even though he probably wouldn't get an apprentice, he loved to see the happy faces of new mentors as they leaded there new students off to show them everything they know. And somewhere, deep inside him, he knew one day that would be him leading of an eager apprentice. He sighed at the thought and wriggled in excitement. Flailpaw would probably get Dogstar. He could almost feel the apprentice anticipation as the leader jumped up onto the great rock. He sighed and gazed up to wait and hear what would happen.[/glow]

Crowkit walked lazily out of the nursery. She had heard the call of Dogstar up on the rock, and she had dragged herself out. She strode over to Acorntail and stared up at the leader. Well, I am old enough to catch prey! Thoughts runned through her mind. she was over six moons and still not a apprentice. Well I just have to be patient....

[xx. Dogstar]

Seeing that most everyone had settled, Dogstar yowled again for quiet. Silence crept out, and finally he said, "Cats of ShadowClan, I have called you here for one reason, and one reason only. Many of the apprentices in ShadowClan have gone without mentors for very long. I am here to appoint them either apprentices or give the apprentice a mentor." A breeze shifted the trees above camp, making snow gently flutter down. Dogstar's kind smile crept onto his face. Lifting his head a little higher, he said, "Flailpaw, you have been faithful to this Clan and ready for a mentor." He flicked his tail for Flailpaw to come up, and then said, "Liontooth, you are ready for an apprentice, and Flailpaw I'm sure has been a faithful friend during this battle between Clans. Pass on all your knowledge to him and be sure to keep him in order."

Flailpaw's eyes brightened, but dimmed a little. His tail drooped a little lower. Flailpaw, although very happy, was a little disappointed. Flailpaw had thought he may have gotten to have Dogstar, and what an honor. He sighed. Well, maybe Dogstar is just... Too busy He looked up to Liontooth. Then turned away. Liontooth was a great warrior, even if Flailpaw had never met him, and so he turned his head away. He didn't want Liontooth to see his very obvious disappointment.

[Ragged & Others]

Liontooth looked over to his new apprenticce. He seemed... disappointed. Slowly padding forward to him, "Congratulations, Flailpaw." He spoke, happy to be the first to be able to congratulate him. He still seemed to try to hide his diappoiment, but Liontooth had a thought of why. He wanted a different mentor, or he wanted another kit to become an apprentice with him. Sighing, Liontooth thought nervously, Nothing is worse than being unhappy on your apprentice cermony. He tried to cheer Flailpaw by telling him, "You are a honor to have as my apprentice." Giving him a half smile, Liontooth walked off for others to give Flailpaw there respects.

Flailpaw was surprised, he had assumed that Liontooth would be mad... Maybe not everything is as bad as it seemed. He gave a crooked grin at the warrior before he walked away. Thanks he thought, his eyes shining with happiness.

[xx. Dogstar]

Once again, Dogstar spoke. "Most recently...or maybe, not so recently, a certain Crowkit happened to turn six moons. Her moon passing has come and gone, and I intend to give her a mentor now." He paused - he had most definetely seen what had flitted by in Flailpaw's eyes. Was he to do it? Bright lights seem to shine in his eyes. He knew he had to. "Crowkit, will you please come up here?" He motioned with his tail.

Flailpaw looked up at Dogstar a little confused. Was the ceremony not over yet? Then a jolt shook him. Crowkit was going to be mentored by Dogstar? Flailpaw almost felt jealousy wash over him in waves, but then he sttled himself. You're not important, that's why you were abandoned, don't even think for one second that you are good enough to even be here.

[Burningwing]

Crowkit pricked her ears up. She was going to be an apprentice? She felt shivers run through her and her stomach flipped. Who would be her mentor? She didn't really care as long as she was going to be an apprentice. She took a deep breath, puffed out her ebony coloured chest and, timidly, shifted onto her paws. Her claws flexed in the snow and she lifted one paw after another up to the leader. Her pads were frozen with crusts of sharp ice that poked up out of the ground, where water had dripped and then frozen. She felt the coolness of the large rock under her. She felt jolts of iciness shoot up her body. Every thing seemed to be going in slow motion. She shot a glance down to the clearing. Flailpaw seemed to be confused. She shook her head then turned to look up at Dogstar.

Dogstar looked fondly at the little kit's face that was quivering with excitement. Smiling in a fatherly way, he turned back to the Clan and said, "I hereby give you Crowpaw!" Looking about, he announced, "And I myself will be her mentor. I promise to StarClan that I will pass on all the knowledge I know to my apprentice." He leaned down to touch noses with her.

Flailpaw looked away. That was not fair at all! If he had been the second one up there, he might have been mentored by Dogstar. He shook himself. Who cares? Not him, he was getting mentored, would become a loyal warrior, and wouldn't have to subdue himself to tryingt to impress his leader at every training session. Maybe he had it easy. Flailpaw stretched forward. Think logically, Dogstar was just made leader, so it's different, I mean, Liontooth is agreat warrior, and so was Dogstar, so there's generally no difference so shut your mouth adn go be happy.

[Burningwing]

Crowkit, no, Crowpaw gaped with astonishment. She was going to get mentored by the leader! She blinked a few times, making sure it wasn't a dream. It wasn't. She leaned forward to touch noses with Dogstar. The cold seemed to evaporate out of the world. She felt warm, very warm. She pulled back and grinned up at Dogstar. She couldn't wait to start training! She wanted to be the best apprentice ever.
Still beaming, she strode down the rock, tail held high in the air above her head. She felt her paws hit the ground and the warmth left, but the excitement was still there. She wondered what it would be like training. Would it be hard and she would get stressed out? Or would it be easy as putting one leg in front of the other? Some where in between probably.
Crowpaw padded over to the other new apprentice, Flailpaw. She knew he had wanted to be mentored by Dogstar.
" Congratulations Flailpaw! Hope you do well with your mentor!"
She mewed, waving a snowflake off her nose.

Flailpaw almost ignored the new apprentice, but instead he looked over at her and smiled. Wait... Did he just smile at her? Why would he do that?

[Burningwing]

Crowpaw grinned back at Flailpaw. When he didn't reply she laughed good naturedly. " I guess you get to chose where you want to sleep in the apprentice den first, since you were an apprentice before me." She shook her sleek, black fur, sending a few clumps of snowflake balls flying. She yawned and shifted her shoulders a few times to loosen them out. She stretched out her front paws as far as they could go. The white tips on them seemed to meld into the white blanket of crisp snow. Since she had been having a nap, she still had kinks in her muscles. She wiggled her shoulders a bit more and sat back up.
" Maybe we could train together sometime?"
She asked flicking her ears back to keep the snow from blowing into them.

Flailpaw shrugged. "I don't know, I would have liked to be Dogstar's apprentice, but I'm assuming the sessions will be very demanding, and I'm the lazy type" He mewed at her, eyes shining. Snow drifted towards the ground, and by now his dark tabby pelt seemed almost silver. He flicked his tail a bit to get the snow off him as it froze his spine. "'S'cold out today I guess." Flailpaw replied to the kit.

[Burningwing]

Crowpaw nodded. Her own tail was frozen o the tip as though the blood in it had turned to ice. she was so glad that she had got out of the nursery, and even more ecstatic about having the leader as a mentor. But Flailpaw was right, maybe she would have to work harder to impress Dogstar.
She tried to wave away the thought, she would impress him! She knew she had to! And she had a question for Dogstar. She glanced at Flailpaw. she wanted to get to know him better, but she guessed she would have to later. " Well, see you later!" She meowed as she stood up and shook of the snow that lay like a blanket over her back. She touched his cheek with her long white tipped tail then stalked back over to Dogstar.
" Will we be able to train today?" She asked hopefully, her eyes sparkling in the sun.

Flailpaw's eyes watched her go. He sighed heavily before closing his eyes in solemnity. Maybe I just don't belong here Flailpaw thought. Dizzily, he got up and onto his paws, shaking a bit, then padding away to the edge of the camp. He wanted to get away for now.

[xx. Dogstar]

A thrill went through the tom's spine as he felt himself touch noses with his apprentice. He saw Flailpaw almost shun the new apprentice, and he knew that he must have been upset that he hadn't been mentored by Dogstar. Of course, the leader recalled, he had asked Liontooth to mentor Flailpaw before he found out there was another apprentice needing to be mentored. He shook himself. It wasn't like he could change what he had already decreed.

He sniffed merrily. Tiny snowflakes sparkled like tiny stars in the sunlight, and he leaned down to take a closer look at a certain pattern. Suddenly, he heard Crowkit's voice. Looking up, he smiled as she asked him excitedly if they'd train that day. Thinking for a moment, he said, "Well, I don't have any duties as far as I can remember, so I guess I can." The leader smiled kindly. "Are you sure you want to start today?"

[Burningwing]

Crowpaw smiled from ear to ear. She really wanted to start training as soon as possible so she could show Dogstar her moves. "I don't think i would be able to sleep if i didn't!" She whirled around in a circle too show her ethusiasim. She grinned back up at Dogstar, he white fangs glistened in a shaft of light. She was still so excited about getting mentored by the leader.
Her ebony pelt shined and twinkled as patterned ice crystals fell from the sky, showering her and freezing the tips of her ears. She twisted back over to Dogstar and pricked up her ears.
" What are we going to do first?"

[xx. Dogstar]

If any a cat could raise its eyebrows, that is what Dogstar would have been doing. A hint of amusement traced his voice. "Ah, Crowpaw, first we must get to the training grounds and out of camp, my friend." He smiled at her. "Then we will start, okay?"

Crowpaw was still grinning widely. She waved her tail around like a flag and pranced in place. She hopped a tail-length back then spun around, sliding on the slick winter ice.
" What are we waiting for?!"
She purred in amusement and twined her white tipped tail around the thin air.

Dogstar purred enthusiastically. "Of course! What ARE we waiting for? Let's go!" He flicked in the direction out of camp. "Come on, Crowpaw!" For a moment he was the carefree warrior he once was.

Crowpaw raced ahead, her paws burning as she leaped out of the Shadowclan camp. She couldn't wait to start training!
