Shade stalked deep within the woods. His mangy black coat, stained red with blood, icy eyes flashing with memories from the just passed battle. He knew they had won, but the question was, what? What had they risked their lives for, what did they prove? His ears pricked for any movement, anything that wasn’t right in the forest he called home. Suddenly a noise grew from his right on the other side of the bushes. He didn’t let his eyes wander, but parted his mouth to take the scent in, a wolf of his kind he could tell, but one he knew all too well. A dark brown pelt with a black stripe running down the middle of his back appeared, Kliever.
“Shade?” Shade didn’t want to answer but what choice did he have.
“Kliever”
“The pack wants to return to camp, shall I lead them?”
“No, find Alpen and have him lead the pack” Kliever was appalled but not surprised by the answer. He knew Shade didn’t have trust in him, after all he was the pup of one of the evilest wolves in the land, Kyan, although he never knew his father, he was marked by him. All wolves knew them both, and there was no escaping that, but Kliever thought that he may escape the wrath by staying with his pack, and gaining their trust no matter what.
“Yes Shade, as you wish,” with a slight bow he was off to rejoin the pack and left Shade to himself once more. Shade knew that he couldn’t judge Kliever by who his father was, but it was hard not to. Shade shook his head to clear it. He had bigger problems, they may have just won the war, but the kwest lay ahead, inevitable, and dangerous like a snake in his path.
