It was a quiet, peaceful Greenleaf day in the nursery, just like any other day. A few kits were play-fighting in the entrance of the nrsery, with queens talking and chatting about. The fresh-kill pile was full and the scent wafted into the nursery. A few of the inhabitants of the nursery licked there chops. On this clear, sunny day, everything seemed to be normal. But did no one notice the small kit that was missing?
Suddenly, a small black kit burst into the nursery, carrying a vole half her size. With much effort, she heaved it to her pile of moss and looked up at the faces of the annoyed queens. "Here you are, everyone!" she yowled with a voice of pure joy. I've been hunting!

"Hunting? Aren't you a little young for that?" An amused voice purred. Entering the nursery was a young, tall, cheetah-like she-cat. Her dark amber eyes danced with laughter as she looked at the playful kit. She reminds me of my kithood days, well the days I had here... Cheetahpaw thought to herself.

The dirty-looking kit glanced up at the pretty she-cat. "Nuh, de waryurs tow me two." She rolled her eyes and spit out the vole. "I mean, one of the warriors told me to bring this for the queens!" Sootkit smiled at Cheetahpaw and peered around the nursery for another welcoming face. She saw... none.

Charlie padded in behind cheetahpaw. His happy laugh surrounded the small nursery. He loved kits."I wish I had kits of my own". He sighed sadness in his yellow eyes. "no body would even wat to have kits with me anyways."he said to himself so only the keenest ears could hear.

Cheetahpaw smiled down on Sootkit. Then a voice reached her ears, and she recognized Charlie's voice. Cheetahpaw turned around and smiled at the tom.
"Hey, Charlie" Cheetahpaw mewed, "I do too, kits would be wonderful"
Cheetahpaw turned to Sootkit again. "So you really caught that vole?" Cheetahpaw purred, "Very impressive"

The kit smiled with pride. Yep, she had caught it! But however much the two cats praised her, she could'nt get over her lonliness. Did no queen like her? Did no one want to be her protecter in the hard times? She drooped visibley, and started grooming herself.

Cheetah saw the cat's excitement vanish from her eyes. She looked... upset. What could be wrong? Cheetahpaw wrapped her tail protectively around Sootkit, a motherly instinct kicking in. "What's wrong?" Cheetahpaw asked gently.

The she-cat's actions lifted her spirits slightly. It soon became hard to remember her troubles as she breathed in the apprentice's sweet, warm scent. She lifted her head and smiled wearily, preparing herself to answer. "Well, no-one in the nursery is my friend," she started. "Ever since I was found in the forest, the queens want nothing with me except to blame. While all other kits are drinking in the scent of milk, I drink in the scent of mildewed leaves. And no matter what I do to help them, I'm never accepted." The shadow-colored kit blended well in the corners of the nursery, and it was easy to forget her presence. But she did not belong in the nursery anymore; she was already 6 moons, going on 7. Of course, it was not her responsibility to remember an apprentices' age, and the queens didn't care much, so how in Starclan could Wingstar know?
