stop and stare

The dusk light cast a rosy orange glow upon the ThunderClan camp, reflecting off of the sightless silver eyes that belonged to Sageleaf. She sat beside the warrior's den, grooming her dark brown paws with nothing else to do. No patrols, no hunting parties, no nothing. At least nobody thought her useless anymore, and that was something. Her ears twitched as she heard the chirp of a bird high in a tree somehwere, and she sat up. It was like the forest was calling to hear, yearning her to go hunting. But she probably would have to go on a dawn patrol tomorrow, or even a night patrol tonight, so perhaps that wasn't wise. She sighed. If she'd been on a patrol earlier, she'd be out in the forest right now. But she supposed hunting wasn't exactly her strongest point, she'd always been better at fighting. Sageleaf stood and stretched before sitting back down and waiting for someone to come talk to her.

A small white pelt rose and fell silently beside the flanks of the other kittens in the nursery. Kitten, that was an understatement. Soaringkit was a large, pure white, eight moon old kit. He had a slight temper but knew how to keep it under controll, and his hobbies? Sitting and watching, learning from others, and sneaking out of camp. Opening his brilliant blue eyes Soaringkit looked around the nursery. He sighed, stood, streached and darted out the entrance to hte nursery. Slowing as he actually exited he looked back, making sure he didn't wake anyone. Leting his light and sure pawsteps carry him away from the nursery and out towards the camp entrance he was sure he would escape this time.

Sageleaf felt vibrations run through the ground and inter her paws as someone moved out of the nursery. Her ears twitched and she could hear it's breathing. Or rather, his, as she soon found out as she lifted her nose to scent it. It was Searingkit. She shook her head. Soaringkit was certainly old enough to be and apprentice at eight moons. No wonder he was sneaking out again! "Soaringkit, where are you going?" she mewed quietly, her silver eyes staring straight at him even though she couldn't see him. Her mouth curled into a slightly exasperated smile as she felt the kit's rapid movements away from the nursery. "Come back here. I won't get you in trouble." She mewed, still smiling.

Soaringkit could clearly see the entrance, sure he shouldn't leave but he wanted to learn at least something. But then at the sound of a voice he froze where he stood, turning his head he looked back over his shoulder at Sageleaf. Latting his tail sink to the ground he turned and virtually crawled over to Sageleaf. Caught! Blast! Laying on the ground he looked up "Sorry". He was a gentleman, well he used to be when he was at the right age for the right position as kit.

More vibrations danced through her paws as the kit crawled towards her. He seemed pretty disappointed. She laughed her quiet, strange laugh as he mewled, "Sorry." She quiet laughing and smiled. "It's alright. I ran away plenty when I was a kit. Next time try going through that tiny hole in the back of the nursery and out of the wall." Ah, she was sharing her old trade secrets! Well someone had to start going through her old escape tunnel before it disappeared. It'd taken her a moon to find it and hide it and widen it all while her parents weren't watching her. None of that hard work should be wasted.

Soaringkti gave a small half smile and relaxed. Pushing him into a sitting position he looked to the nursery. Secret tunnel behind the nursery? Sweet! Turning his blue eyes back to Sageleaf he shrugged. "I shouldn't be in the Nursery, I should almost be done with my training." Turning his now sad gaze to the leaders den he sighed. "It isn't fair."

Soaringkit seemed brightened by the idea of a secret tunnel at the back of the nursery. It works every time. Tell a kit something that will help them do whatever they want, and, tah-dah, they're happy again. "Don't tell any of the other kits about it though. It's special." Sageleaf mewed, her cloudy eyes now fixed on the sky, where stars were beginning to rise. Then she realized the young cat was speaking to her again. "Of course. Why aren't you an apprentice yet though? You could go ask Brownstar why you're being held back. I'm sure you'd do well as an apprentice. I've no idea what you look like, but I'm sure you're plenty intelligent." Yes, he was. It would be wonderful to mentor a kit like him, but she knew she couldn't. She could never mentor, because she couldn't teach him like others would. She could teach him to see without seeing perhaps, but that was all. She was different.

Soaringkit nodded and looked back to the blind she-cat. He then pulled his tail around his paws and spoke "I don't know...she's probebly busy." He went to turn and look at the leaders den again but couldn't move his eyes from Sageleaf's "I'm sure you'd make a great mentor. You can't see, therefore you can teach an apprentice how to fight, with out the gift of sight." He smiled, he had a point. If a blind cat taught a...not blind cat, how to fight without seeing, it would just make them more dangerous! He could barely contain is excitement.

Her expression brightened at Soaringkit's last words. It was true. She could mentor. And her apprentice would have an extrea skill that only a blind cat could give them. The'd develop the skill like she had, but it would all be a training exercise. Terrific! If she could explain this, then an apprentice could be hers to train, to teach skills and everything they needed. It was brilliant! She beamed at Soaringkit. "I never thought of it that way. Neither did anyone else, apparently." Her tail was unconsiously twitching at her side, just waiting to tell the clan Soaringkit's views. But she controlled herself. It was probably too soon. She had only been made a warrior two moons ago... But then she'd have fresh experience. The negative part of her mind and the positive part were having a tug-o-war, but it didn't show on her face.

A low purr rose in Soaringkit's throat, he loved making cats happy. His paws kneeded the ground, I wonder what Brownstar will think? Naww he didn't care, today was great, he had a secret passage to escape through, made a new friend, and gave that new friend hope. "How did your training go? I mean, were you blind before or after apprenticeship?" He didn't mean to pry, but he was an apprentice aged kit, he was just curious.

steady feet don't fail me now

Sageleaf noticed that Soaringkit was acting rather pleased with himself, and she knew that she was very pleased with him. Her ears twitched at his question, and she paused before beginning. "I was born blind. That's why I made that hole. My parents treated me like I couldn't do anything for myself. But I could scent and hear better than anyone in the clan, and I hadn't even learned to see with my paws yet! So I ran away. And when I ran away, I found our new medicine cat." She shook her head at the memory. No matter what they did to protect her, Featherclaw and Shadowstone would never be truly loved by her again. "My mentor thought that way too, in the beginning. But at our first battle training session I showed him how much I really could do! Surprised him so much he fell over!" She laughed again. Searedheart had always been a bit of a joker, no matter how quiet and strong he acted. "Then I figured out my paw-vision in a battle, when I felt a cat sneaking up behind me. I attacked it without even looking at it." She looked at Soaringkit, her cloudy silver eyes still dancing with memories. "I didn't struggle like most blind cats would."

Soaringkit smiled, "Must have been...scarry. I mean not knowing what was going on and everything, like what your surroundings look like and stuffs." He looked to the ground and started to paw at his tail, just something random to do. Letting his bright eyes move back to Sageleaf's he gave a small half smile. "Hey! Do you want to talk to Brownstar with me? I mean see what she thinks about you mentoring someone? Maybe me!" I'm clam, most of the time and I'll listen! Unlike some of the other kits. His tail tip started to twitch in excitement as his eyes drifted to Brownstar's den.

"It wasn't really. I was born with it, so I was used to using just scent and hearing to know what's going on." Sageleaf meowed. Gentle vibrations reached her sensitive paws as he pawed at his tail, making the edges of her lips curl up a little more. Then her ears perked again as he spoke. "Hey! Do you want to talk to Brownstar with me? I mean see what she thinks about you mentoring someone? Maybe me!" That was a good idea! Mentoring someone who had suggested her mentoring? Soaringkit seemed a lot like her. "I... Sure!" She mewed. Her lips were curled even more now.
