Her paws, small and dainty, moved over the smooth, warm rocks. Long legs supported by such small paws stretched out with each step, revealing her lean muscle. No longer did the cat have the kit appearance that she'd been deemed to for life. Ten moons old... She was ten moons old, nearly warrior-age, and was still dubbed Silentkit. Her only friend would be a warrior soon, and she'd be left behind. Already she'd been left behind. She'd been foolish to think she belonged in RiverClan, but was ThunderClan truly better? She doubted it. Why was she at Sunningrocks? Just to stay at for the night. She'd be leaving soon. Where was she going? Who knew. Loners, rogues... wherever she'd be accepted.
Her silky white pelt was like the first snow of Leafbare. Silver ears, paws and a slightly paler silver tail tip looked almost like the stones that poked out of the snow. Her eyes were like the ice that froze over the river every Leafbare, and were even more like that now. Ice blue. Ice cold. Her mouth would open in a sigh, but no sound would come out. Silentkit remembered when she was merely five moons old, and a warrior had told her that someday she'd get her voice. Five moons later, it still hadn't happened. She was still a mute kit. She still had no voice, in anything. Silentkit was still unheard, and would remain that way. Nothing anyone said would change that.
There were cats worse off then her. Some where blind, others deaf, and even some both. So why wasn't she made an apprentice because of being something so simple as mute? Had her leader simply forgotten her, since she could not remind him when her apprentice ceremony had come and passed? Then again, wouldn't someone notice a ten-moon old cat, too young to be a queen and too old to be a kit, sitting in the Nursery? It was an odd thought. Thinking about it, Silentkit realized that RiverClan life had never truly been for her. After all, she truly hated the taste of fish, and despised swimming.
Letting out a silent sigh, Silentkit lay down on one of the rocks. Her half gray and half white tail flicked back and forth as she stared down into the bubbling river below her. Pawsteps sounded behind her, though she did not move. Why bother? She couldn't speak to defend herself anyway.

A sleek, tiny black apprentice trotted confidently along the RiverClan and ThunderClan border. She had no real reason to be patrolling, in fact, she should have been hunting. However, inexperiance hindered her skills and frustrated her. Blackpaw, who had a fierce temper already, did not enjoy being frustrated. Her pride often got in her way, adding to her size and age. But what did that matter now? She wasn't obligated to be hunting and patrolling was just as useful, probobly even better for her. Hunting was such a drag! Prancing now with great cheerfulness, Blackpaw rounded the bend where Sunning Rocks came into view. She paused, her gold eyes sparkling and her whiskers twitching. A nice, warm stretch on the sun-baked stone sounded appealing. Just a quick brake, and she'd get to work again. Checking first to make sure no one was there, Blackpaw raced to the rocks, jumping up. It wasn't until her paws had touched the stone's surface that she realized another cat was there. Confused by mingled scents, Blackpaw arched her back and fluffed up her tail. "Who are you?" she spat at the white she-cat. "What are you doing here?

Moons of experience have shown Silentkit how to communicate in simple ways. Though she could not tell her name, she could tell where she was from. All it took was from a flick of her tail. And she did just that. Silentkit flicked her tail toward the RiverClan side of the border, showing the cat that she was from RiverClan. However, her claws remained sheathed to try and show the young cat that she was no threat. The small black apprentice appeared hostile, which is what Silentkit expected. She hadn't really thought she'd recieve the welcome-wagon parade by trespassing on another cat's territory.
She smiled at the apprentice, flicking her tail in greeting. If she acted hostile, she'd only be chased off, and where would that leave her? The sun was already beginning to set, and Silentkit needed a place to stay the night. Either that, or she'd be forced to return to RiverClan and would just have to leave in the morning.

Blackpaw continued to bare her teeth as she looked at the new-comer. A moment of confuson swept over her as she watched the cat flick her tail in response. When the she-cat looked at her with friendly signs, Blackpaw was even more confused. This cat wasn't from her Clan, why was it being friendly? She sank back onto her pads and searched the cat for tense muscles or signs of hostility. When she couldn't detect a threat, Blackpaw mewed in a more calm, confused voice. "You're not from ThunderClan, and you're not supposed to be here." she mewed as if she were reasoning with herself. "Um, what's you're name? Are you RiverClan?" Blackpaw's gaze changed again to a more hostile glare. "Do you know Firepaw?" Her tail lashed as she said the name. If this cat was a friend of Firepaw, she'd definatley chase her off.

Silentkit was not able to answer the first question, but a moment after the apprentice asked if she was from RiverClan her head nodded eagerly. How simple it was to communicate with others now, even if she couldn't speak. Yes or no questions were the easiest for her, but sometimes she could simply nod or flick her tail at something to get her point across. Of course, when cats didn't understand it got the young she-cat frustrated, and she'd have to work harder to get them to understand. Most cats tended to dump their problems onto her, since she couldn't spill out what they had said, but never once had she been able to share her problems.
As the she-cat asked if she knew Firepaw, Silentkit wasn't sure how to answer that. She did know him a little, though she wasn't really sure if they were close friends. He was one moon older then her, and brother to one of Silentkit's only friends Earthpaw. Basically, that was all she knew. So, in response to the apprentice's question, Silentkit nodded, though shrugged as well. Basically she was saying that she knew him a little bit, but not very well.

Blackpaw's ear twitched as she watched. Slowly, very slowly, she began to realize that something was different about the cat. What, she wasn't sure. The little apprentice licked the tip of her nose before asking a new question. "Um, is there something, er, wrong with you?"

The apprentice's words stung a bit, and Silentkit's gaze moved to her paws. Something was wrong with her, but hearing another say it made her grow tense. Then again, did being mute mean that something was wrong with you? It shouldn't. It just meant that you were different. But, in order for the apprentice to understand, the ten-moon-old kit nodded slowly, her muscles tense with each movement.
How Silentkit would explain that something was wrong, she did not know. Right now they were playing cherades, seeing who could guess what by one's movement. And now, Silentkit was stumped on how to show the apprentice that she was indeed, mute.

A tabby striped tom padded through the forest. His tail twitched and his heart thudded. Silentkit was here. She in Thunderclan. The tabby feline let out a sigh and then lifted his head and sniffed the air. Towards Sunningrocks. Earthpaw pulled his legs forward and then trotted faster through the unknown territory. The male's pelt was well groomed and the colors of it were vibrant in the strong light shining through the trees. His eyes were different though, silver but clouded. Like a lake with fog covering it. Nothing could see through the fog. that was how Earthpaw felt. He couldn't see through the fog. His eyes were the lakes and the damage was done. He shook his head to get the thought away and then he caught a scent that scent him racing through the ferns. Silentkit.
Earthpaw then let out a quiet mew of joy and then ran like a scared animal being chased by a terrible creature through the woods. His paws hit the ground with hard thuds and the leaves covering the forest's floor were kicked up behind him and whirled around behind his feet. Earthpaw felt the ground get harder though and he slowed down. He then bumped into a rock with his head. the tom let out a whimper and then sat down, his head pounding. then he remembered silentkit. Earthpaw got up and shook out his pelt before padding onto the rocks. He found it suprisingly easy to climb them. Then he stopped, whiskers quivering when he heard a voice.
Earthpaw climbed into a clump of ferns next to the talking. he could smell the scent of Silentkit strongly and a Thunderclanner. The one talking was the Thunderclanner, a female and an apprentice. The tabby striped tom flicked his tail as he listened. His anger slowly rose at how stupid the Thunderclanner was. Couldn't the she-cat figure out that Silentkit couldn't speak?!? Earthpaw then stepped out of the ferns, he looked as calm as if this was his own territory.
Is there something wrong with you? There is nothing wrong with Silentkit. She is mute, so what. i'm blind, does it look like that is hindering any of my movements? I found my way to Thunderclan without any trouble. So, what exactly do you want from my friend?

Blackpaw whipped around, her fur bristling and her hostility mounting. All these RiverClanners! Just walked in whenever they liked, didn't they? She was about to hiss at Earthpaw when his words sank into her mind. Did he say he was...blind? And the she-cat was mute? Blackpaw's head whipped from one cat to the next as she considered the truth. Well, he had to be telling the truth because the tom's eyes looked rather dead and come to think of it, had the she-cat spoken at all? "You're blind?" Blackpaw mewed, somewhat bewildered. "And you can't talk?" she asked Silentkit. Her gold eyes widened. "Wow!" she exclaimed to both of them. "That must be really annoying!"

The sound of Earthpaw's voice truly lifted Silentkit's spirits. As soon as she saw her tabby friend appear, she stood up and walked over to stand beside him. Really, Earthpaw was her only friend in RiverClan, and she hadn't been able to see him due to all his training. His presence was comforting to the young she-cat, and any coldness that had been in her ice blue eyes disappeared.
The ThunderClan apprentice's words caused Silentkit's eyes to flash, just a bit of anger now sparking in their depths. Annoying? This cat clearly didn't understand. But Silentkit was never truly one to show her anger, so to make sure no one saw she moved her gaze to her paws before looking back up at the young black she-cat.

Blackpaw looked at the RiverClan pair, very confused but even more curious. What was blindness like? How could Silentkit survive without ever uttering a single word? Discretion wasn't a virtue Blackpaw had learned to practice, and therefore she didn't usually think before she spoke. She swiped her tongue over her muzzle and wrinkled her nose. "So," she began, in a mew full of thought. "Well, I guess I don't know your names yet. I'm Blackpaw." She dipped her head in a kindly way, keeping her gold eyes on the other young cats. Her hostility was completely wiped away, replaced by curiosity. "What are your names?"

Out of the shadows slipped a lean, hard muscled body, each movement spinning knots and ripples under the short, thick fur of the tom. His well-groomed pelt glistened and shone as the sunlight sunk through the leafy green canopy, dappling the ground below with dapples of shadow. Like a crackling flame he swung forward, lime and gold eyes glistening like small, precious gems, embedded in a face with light orange fur shining like polished gold. Further down his lithe body, patches of darker orange and bright yellow made him look as though he were a patch work doll, bits and pieces of different pelts sown together to form his own, but all of them the same base hue; Orange.
Grass quivered as he moved his paws beneath him, long ivory claws digging into the soft earth with each bound that he made. Riverclan...Riverclan...he could smell the sharp, savoury taste of river spray and willow catkins. Sleek bodies, shedding water down in sheets and glowing yellow eyes piercing into him. Thunderclan too, but only Blackpaw. He could almost taste the hostility rising from her fur, but surprise etched his features as it was wiped away as clearly and cleanly as a spring rain. Scorchingkit grunted, feeling his curiosity being replaced with cold, hard frustration. Why would the young she-cat do such a thing? He knew she wasn't about to attack, but why wouldn't she be driving them out of thunderclan territory?
As the young tom broke through the thick undergrowth into the clearing that was sunningrocks, he gasped. Sharp recognition burnt through his fur, making it stand on end. A small, cautious body placed on long legs, white fur like cream spilt into a mold, darkening to a silvery sheen on her ears, paw and tail tip. It was Silentkit, and he could see the sunlight gleaming off her riverbed ice blue eyes. Memories floated back to him, like soft white clouds filling his mind. As a young cat, they were the same age, he remembered meeting the kit on the riverbed. Confusion had shifted through curiosity when she would not speak to him. But then he remembered...dark tabby markings on a agouti brown coat. Earthpaw had interrupted and took Silentkit back to camp, and Scorchingkit returned to his own, wishing so vividly he would meet her again.
And now...here she was, and yet again Earthpaw was right beside her, this time with eyes dim and pale, as though all brightness and vibrancy had been sucked from them. Scorchingkit shut his eyes so tightly that he swore he could see stars. He finally saw her again and yet once again he was stuck on the other side with Earthpaw as the barrier. Perhaps they were mates now...the thought pierced his heart and let it slowly deflate. After all, he was in Thunderclan, she was in Riverclan. Besides, she didn't even remember him as far as he knew. Slowly, he stepped from the bracken and approached the sunningrocks until he could feel the soothing warmth under his paw pads. Word seemed to escape him, as though they hid among the many creases and cracks in the stone. But finally he managed; " Hello Silentkit. Its been awhile since I last say you."

Eyes flashing yet again, for it should've been clear that she couldn't answer that question, Silentkit ignored the apprentice's words- though she did take note on her name. Blackpaw. She nodded in response to Blackpaw, saying that she heard her, before the sounds of more pawsteps reached her ears. Silentkit glanced about, her pelt bristling anxiously. So many cats had already shown up... would he plans be interupted completely? Glancing toward where she heard the pawsteps, she watched as an orange-calico tom, about her age, stepped out of the bushes. She felt her eyes widen in recognition.
" Hello Silentkit. Its been awhile since I last saw you."
Memories of the day by the riverbed flooded into Silentkit's mind. She remembered wanting desperately to prove herself to Dragonstar, so she'd snuck out of camp. She remembered the rage she had felt as she stalked about, and how hostile she had probably appeared to Scorchingkit. And yet he had been kind to her. Silentkit couldn't help but wonder if he knew why she hadn't spoken to him. Finally, in response to Scorchingkit's words, Silentkit flicked her tail in greeting, smiling as if to say that she remembered him.

Scorchingkit felt a fire of warmth spread from his nose to his tail tip as Silentkit gave the acknowledgment that she recognized him. Yet, he felt something twisting and turning in his gut, and he knew it was not just worms. It was a feeling, unknown and untouched, as he realized Earthpaw was remaining silent. The heat on his paw pads was making him drowsy, but he held down a yawn as well as he could. That was when he heard Blackpaw's voice break through his thoughts.
"You know them?"
He felt a lance of annoyance jolt through him. Well, if he had said 'I haven't seen you in awhile.', wouldn't it be obvious that he knew them? The young tom always thought that questions like that were often to unthought out to answer. His breath hissed through the space between his teeth, then he answered in a silky purr, " Yes, I know them, I meet them once on the riverbank."

Blackpaw
Blackpaw blinked her big gold eyes in confusion, first at Scorchingkit then at Silentkit and Earthpaw. "No way!" she finally exclaimed. "Your not supposed to be out here by yourself!" Then more offensive, "Why don't I know them?"

The tabby striped tom let out a grim laugh. His pale eyes would have been ablaze with amusement and astonishment. He stood up and took a step towards Blackpaw. His face, level with hers was solemn but his voice was full of emotion. He stared straight into her bright orbs with his pale lifeless ones. Why don't you know us? Because you're a rule abiding little apprentice. Because not many cats from other clans know us. Why would we want to be known? With cats around like you who stick their noses into other cats' business. Do you think we want to be prodded on why and if we're blind and mute?
Earthpaw now looked at her with a calm face. He took a soft step away. His pelt was bristling a little. The tom was tired of other cats questioning them on their disadvantages though. Why couldn't they just focus on the positive things? The silver striped tom hung his head down in shame suddenly. He was becoming a bitter and mean cat. He raised his head towards Blackpaw again. I'm, I'm sorry Blackpaw. I shouldn't have poured my anger upon you. Please forgive me and try to understand. Most times Silentkit and I meet other cats we are questioned about our disabilities. He waited for the she-cat's reaction.

A slight feeling of intimidation swept over Blackpaw. She wasn't used to other cats getting their noses into her face, speaking boldly and being prickly. That's what she was supposed to do. Her upraised fur lay back dow, however, as Earthpaw offered his apologies. "That's, um, alright. So...nevermind that. I, um, well,... Im six moons old! What about you?" It was the dumbest question ever, but Blackpaw was eager to get a friendly conversation going.

Earthpaw cringed at his mistake. Why did he have to be so bitter. So cold? He was always a happy and kind cat. that was until Featherpaw wrapped him around her paw like a plaything and then threw him to the ground. She warmed his heart and made him love her and then broke him inside for Firepaw. How he resented the she-cat yet he could never truly hate her. Now his only true companion seemed to be Silentkit. Earthpaw then realized how he had zoned out when Blackpaw's voice interrupted his thoughts. That's, um, alright. So...nevermind that. I, um, well,... Im six moons old! What about you?
The tom stopped and stared blankly with unseeing eyes at the fae. Age? What a lovely topic. Little did she probably know that Silentkit's age was the same as his and yet she was still a kit to the clan. Silentkit hated how she was the same age as Earthpaw and was still considered a kit. Age wasn't the most happy subject to Silentkit. Earthpaw shuffled his paws. Well, how about we talk about hunting possibly? Or maybe we should both just leave and try not to be caught by our clans and have to tend to the elders for moons for crossing borders. The male sat down with the end of his words. He pondered on how the other cats would react.

Silentkit simply listened to the conversation as it went from Earthpaw to Blackpaw. She shuffled her paws after a moment, discomfort starting to show. If she had wanted to leave before, it was impossible now. She unsheathed her claws onto the stone for a moment. Then again, it wouldn't be bad to stay in RiverClan for a little while longer. There was still that possibility that things would change, even if it felt like Silentkit would be an elder before she finally became an apprentice. She nodded at Earthpaw's suggestion of leaving; who knew how much trouble a kit like her would get into if she was caught out of camp. She got back to her silver paws, sheathing her claws again and nodding towards both Blackpaw and Scorchingkit. Silentkit was ready to leave, but she waited to hear what the other cats had to say. Blackpaw also stood up, her bright eyes glittering in Silentkit's direction. "It was nice to meet you." she mewed. "I hope your apprentice ceremony is soon, so we can see eachother again." The little apprentice dipped her head politely to Silentkit and then to Earthpaw. "Good hunting!" She turned to Scorchingkit and gave her tail a flick. "We need to go before we get in trouble. I'm not gonna spend the rest of my apprenticeship hunting for ticks!"
