heaven is a halfpipe

Snow lightly flurried to the ground, barely carpeting the cold forest floor. They were accumulating in small delicate piles. Fragile, gentle, beautiful. Their little spectrums shone all over the place and reflected off the iced over surfaces of creeks. Beautiful.. Just like all beauty, it would fade, cease to exist, leave with age or the coming of the sun. Soon these little flakes would melt into the ground as cold water and be sucked up savagely by thirsty roots. Snow. Beauty. Water.

Waterpaw poked at the snow and curiously stuck her tongue in it, only to jump back, startled. She sneezed a few times. She, of course, didn't learn her lesson the first time, and this time buried her face in it. She had a sudden dizzy sensation, as if she had been spinning in circles with her eyes closed. owww Waterpaw thought, trying to collect her thoughts enough to put the scene around her into focus. She sighed and pursed her lips to sneer at the snow.
"Stupid snow." Waterpaw huffed and rolled over in it, getting it all in her fur, but she didn't mind. She was having too much fun. ;D

The day was darkened by the escapade of Sleeppaw. Nightpaw now had no family to talk to, hunt with, or patrol with. He would wander though Thunderclan without ever feeling joyful again. He was alone. He didn't know anyone in the Clan except his brother, and now he's banished.

Nightpaw slumped throughout the forest, wanting some time for himself. His brother, Sleeppaw, was now a loner, accompanied by his mate, Eclipsepaw. They were gone and Nightpaw was now all by himself. He couldn't really think. He didn't marvel at the beauty of the forest as he use too. It seemed dead to him now. He felt that if he trusted the forest, it would just betray him like his brother did. He couldn't trust anyone or anything it seemed.

After a little while of arguing to himself, Nightpaw saw that he was standing behind a bush that was next to where Waterpaw was playing in the snow, which, of course, he didn't mean to go to. Nightpaw decided to say Hello, thinking it would cheer him up to talk to another apprentice. So, Nightpaw stepped through the bush and said," Hey Waterpaw, having fun?"

in my field of paper flowers
and candy clouds of lullaby,
i lie inside myself for hours
and watch my purple skies fly over me

Waterpaw jumped at the sound of another cat's voice. Her paws landed, slipped, and she flopped forward in a very ungraceful somersault that rolled her up to the other cat's paws. She opened her eyes and found herself staring at black paws. Her eyes traveled upwards before resting on the other cat's eyes. She blushed and immediatly began scrambling to her feet.
"Oh Nightpaw, hi..." She mumbled, licking her fur, tidying it up as she was in the presence of another. "I didn't expect anyone to be out here... Are you with someone else?" She glanced around the clearing and came to the answer herself that he was alone. She looked him over, ignoring the feeling of melted snow in her pelt. He looked... Distraught.
"Is something wrong?" Waterpaw shook herself, sending snowflakes everywhere.

Nightpaw half-heartily smiled as Waterpaw stumbled to his feet. After watching her recover, he replied,"No, Waterpaw, I am not with anyone. I am just taking a leisurely walk through the forest, trying to analyzed what just happened. And, seeing as you know that my brother, Wake just left Thunderclan, I am hoping that that answers your second question.

Nightpaw closed his eyes against the cool breeze, trying to relax himself. Slowly, he walked over to a nearby tree and sat down. Sadly, Nightpaw said, "I am sorry that I am pushing my sad and gloomy thoughts onto you, Waterpaw, I don't mean to be a nuisance. I just need some time I guess..."

Waterpaw shrank back from Nightpaw as he began listing off all his days woes. Sure, she'd expected something, but he didn't need to throw it at her. Waterpaw bit her lip and stalked over to and opposite side of the clearing, staring at him as he went on.
At least he was sorry.
Waterpaw sighed heavily and blinked sympathetically at him.
"I'm really sorry. I can't begin to imagine how hard that must be for you." She did feel bad. Some of her kin were in different clans, but not of them had left the clan life altogether. She still got to see them. Waterpaw walked back over to him and gently rested her tail on his shoulder. "We can go hunt if you want. Maybe that will help take your mind off things?" She offered lightly, hoping it would pull him out of his dejected mood.

Nightpaw actually blushed a little as Waterpaw's tail rested on his shoulder, and after listening to Waterpaw's proposition, Nightpaw cheerfully agreed." That sounds great, Waterpaw, where do you want to start?"

[/color] After Nightpaw had said this, he had realized that he couldn't look Waterpaw straight in the eye. Not from fear of her seeing him vulnerable, but from that butterfly-in-the-stomach feeling. Good Starclan. I just basically met Waterpaw, and I've seem to have fallen for her. Nightpaw's anguish and sorrow vanished immeadiately, quickly being replaced by thoughts of Waterpaw and his feeling's for her.

Waterpaw ducked her head under a clump of ferns, feeling warmed by the look she saw in Nightpaw's eyes. She didn't know what it meant, but she liked Nightpaw; he was a cat she could trust. Waterpaw shook herself, trying to rid herself of the other strange feelings in his eyes that she wasn't quite old enough to understand yet. Feeling liberated, she beckoned with her tail for Nightpaw to follow her just as she vanished into another clearing that sloped into a shallow ravine and ended with a small trickling creek. This would be a good place for hunting, given they hadn't frightened everything already with their loud meowing.
Waterpaw opened her jaws to scent the air and took comfort in knowing she was hunting and not on border patrol. She always enjoyed the thrill of catching prey for her clan then simply fighting by claw. At least food would keep the warriors alive a little longer, and help those wounded in battles. Waterpaw immediately scented a water vole and dropped into a crouch to stalk it. She spotted it busily humming around the bank of the creek, and she narrowed her eyes with satisfaction. With a mad dash and glint of her sharp claws, she bought it down as silently as a butterfly's wings. Her eyes gleamed as she turned around to Nightpaw, her victim limp in her jaws.

Nightpaw shook the thought out of his head.Too soon...must be because I'm sad for Wake......it's...it's...nothing. Just as Nightpaw was about to follow Waterpaw, he saw her pad back through the bushes with a vole firmly in her mouth."Great catch!"

[/color] Nightpaw knew it was his turn now. Slowly, he crouched back through the same bush that Waterpaw had just come through and scented a lone mouse. Perfect... Nightpaw quickly rushed towards the mouse who was unaware of his predator, and pounched on it, killing it with one fatal blow.

Full of pride from his catch, Nightpaw walked back over to where Waterpaw was and dropped his prey besides hers. There was a long pause, and Nightpaw couldn't think of anything to say so, he embarrassingly started to groom him, hoping that Waterpaw would stir up a conversation.[/size][/center]

Waterpaw's ears flicked up as she heard Nightpaw swiftly end another life, and she was surprise at his exerptise in hunting. She wondered breifly whether or not he had a mentor yet. Surely he couldn't have learned such skill on his own? She didn't have a mentor, and she was inept at her best. Waterpaw felt slightly embarrassed, knowing that he would outdo her on this particular thing. Sure, she hunted better than she patroled, but only because she enjoyed it. She was just an apprentice, not that good yet.
Lost in thought, Waterpaw hadn't realised she had left Nightpaw there to watch her meandering through her mind. Even more embarassed than before, she flicked her tail uncomfortable and her whiskers dropped.
"That was amazing." She told him, grinning, shaking off her momentary lapse. "Do you have a mentor? You're really good." Waterpaw complemented, her honesty shining in her words.

Nightpaw was a bit shocked as Waterpaw commented so greatly on his hunting skills, no one ever had even noticed. After thinking deeply, Nightpaw answered quietly,"Actually it was my brother who taught me." He sighed before saying, " He was always better at hunting then I was. Always bringing in more prey, or bigger prey....he always beat me. I always trained harder and harder, but he kept beating me. On one cold day, I had wished that I could beat him just once, and on that same day, he left Thunderclan. It's been haunting me this whole time, thinking that I was the one responsible for Wake's dissapearance, even though I knew he had he valid reasons, but still..." Nightpaw slowly closed his eyes as he visioned that dreaded day. Pain and Guilt surged through Nightpaw's body like a shockwave. Trying to blow off some steam, Nightpaw started clawing the bark of the tree next to him, hoping to cool down a bit.....

Waterpaw instantly regretted saying anything. Was she destined to always speak the wrong words to this tom? She felt horrible guilt clawing at her stomach, but how was she supposed to know?! All she had been gettign at was that he was a good hunter! She didn't even really know his broher, she didn't know he was a better hunter or any of this information she was throwing at him! Waterpaw let out an exasperated sigh and closed her eyes, squinting them together tightly. She really just wanted to make this tom feel better, but no matter how hard she tried, he seemed to find every reason available to tear himself even further apart. Sooner or later he'd be so shredded there wouldn't even be anything left for her to even attempt to put together! Waterpaw opened her eyes and stared at him sympathetically as he clawed at the bark. She didn't know what to do or say. Would she just say something else that would make him attack himself? Surely it couldn't be her fault though, right? Even if she only heard him say it outloud a few times, it was more likely he was screaming it in his head, right?
Waterpaw sighed again and padded over to him, resting her tail on his shoulder once again. She had her paws full with this cat. But what struck her as odd was that she really did want to be his friends. She wasn't completely friendless, but she wasn't one of the most popular cats in the Clan. She was too stubborn and defiant for any of the older cats to get too close to her. Maybe Nightpaw could be a friend to her. At least the two of them didn't bicker. Or were they bickering now? Waterpaw bit her tongue and shrugged it away. She could easily handle being friends with him, after all, she was carefree and utterly abundant in energy. Nothing could bring her down. Not even some depressed apprentice, and hopefully, with her help, he wouldn't be depressed for long.

Nightpaw relaxed his muscles as Waterpaw rested her tail on his shoulder. He definitely needed the comfort of some cat, and Waterpaw was probably the one he was waiting for the most. Nightpaw knew there was a connection forming between them as friends, and he even brightened up a bit as he pondered more upon it. Waterpaw would be a fine friend. She's the only one who cares enough to put up with my wailing. Nightpaw then said embarrassingly," Thank you, Waterpaw. I...I really need a friend right.

[/color] He almost shook himself out of his fur as he was making himself so vulnerable. He always knew to never show weakness, but with Waterpaw, he thought that it didn't matter... [/size][/center]

Timidly, Waterpaw allowed herself to grin at him. She playfully shoved his shoulde with her own and laughed.
"You know I'm always here! I'd never leave a friend to suffer. She told him, trying to shake her worries away. Waterpaw didn't like seeing Nightpaw so downtrot. If only he understood that many cats cared for him, and Wake did too, and Wake would want Nightpaw to be happy right? Waterpaw sighed softly to herself and flexed her claws.
"Let's go do something?" She suggested, hoping to pull Nightpaw out of his dejected mood.

Nightpaw thought vigorously.Hmm. What could we do? It's either hunting, or just messing around. He grimaced as he thought of messing around. It sounded more than than huntingNightpaw said,"It would be best for us to hunt for the clan, but personally, I'm in the mood to just walk around, let my mind calm down. You know?"He was trying to be as positive as he could. Waterpaw didn't need to be treated like this. She deserved a normal friend, not a death-to-life loner.
